27 Nov A Healthier You in 2014
by Danielle Cuccio
We all want to be healthier. We often make an effort to “act healthy” but then find ourselves counteracting it with something unhealthy. We have a green juice and then have chocolate cake later that day. It happens! We want a quick fix to health and beauty but the truth is, there is no quick fix. Being healthy is a daily commitment but it can be easy.
As a yoga teacher, it is important for me to stay healthy, fit and feeling good. The five core teachings of yoga are proper exercise, breathing, relaxation, diet and positive thinking. Health and beauty can’t come from just one, they all work together to give you glowing radiant skin, a healthy lean body – and that good feeling physically and emotionally we all crave! If you told your Doctor you get 7-8 hours of sleep and practice yoga daily, but eat a McDonalds Quarter Pounder with Cheese at least twice a week…your health may be in trouble! It is important to take all components of health into consideration and to balance those on a daily basis.
The best part, it doesn’t have to be difficult! Try these 5 Easy Healthy Additions on how to make your 2014 a much healthier, balanced and happier year!
1. YOGA: Practice yoga or some kind of movement 4-5 times a week. Improve circulation and release endorphins. Start making movement a priority almost every day. Yes, walking counts!
2. DIET: Add greens to your diet. Some green superfoods include: Kale, Arugula, Spinach and Spirulina. Good news, you can also indulge! Brentwood’s own, Sweet Rose Creamery, is one of my favorite weekly treats! Treat yourself for your healthy habits.
3. SLEEP: Aim for 7-8 hours a night. Our bodies recharge, regenerate and heal when we sleep. Your mind and body will thank you.
4. BREATH / MEDITATE: This is one is the hardest. We must take at least 5 minutes a day to sit quietly. Close the eyes, check-in and see what’s going on inside your mind and body. If we don’t, we risk living our lives without really living. That’s a big risk to take!
5. POSITIVE THINKING: I love giving my students and readers positive quotes. Sometimes it’s exactly what they need to hear to get them through a difficult time. I make sure to blog quotes once a week. I love going on Pinterest to browse quotes that speak to me at the right moment.
One step at a time, incorporate these into your life. Watch yourself feel and look better.
Namaste.
